Fessock Wood is a majestic oak-dominated woodland situated in tranquil open rural surroundings on a lush green valley hillside. The land is mostly sloping with ample flatter areas for walking and private holiday camping, and is effectively drained by some water channels winding down through the rich stoney soils to the burn below. The woodland is well served by water features with charming burns along the top southwest and bottom northeast boundaries where native red and roe deer drink, and ramsons and other wild flowers line the banks.
The wide swathe of mature oak, ash, silver birch, hornbeam, beech and Norway spruce, forming most of Fessock Wood, is very pleasant to walk through, with bluebells, primroses, gorse, snowdrops and daffodils visible in spring. A new internal access path links the parking area with a large open glade to the east, then continues and doubles back through the middle of the wooded area nearly reaching the old burnside track below. The glade, created by past tree clearance, could be left to nature or replanted in part with native species if desired.
Access: External access is via a hard stone private track leading off the A714 over which there is a shared legal all-purpose vehicular right of access, shown green on the maps. Internal access is provided by a new packed earth and stone track leading into the wood and new and old walking paths.
Sporting Rights: These are included with the land.
Mineral Rights: These are owned and included with the land except where reserved by statute.
Surrounding Area: Fessock Wood is situated near the top of the Daljarrock Forest in mixed woodland and rural hillside settings in the pretty River Stinchar valley. There is a great variety of wildlife in the valley, including red squirrel, red deer, roe deer, otters, badgers and reptiles and birds from blue tits to buzzards, plover to peregrine. Many nearby walks and the tranquil unspoilt environment make the area perfect for nature and general outdoor enthusiasts. A walk up Knockdolian Hill provides panoramic land and sea views and the new long-distance walking route - The Carrick Way - is scheduled to open very shortly. The huge Galloway and Carrick Forests can be explored further to the east and an early spring wildlife festival takes place in neighbouring Dumfries & Galloway every year. The coastal town of Girvan and shingle beaches at Woodland and Ballantrae Bay, are within 10 miles to the West. Nearby Pinwherry and Barrhill villages have local services whilst Colmonell and Dailly have forestry mills/suppliers. Ayr, Stranraer and Newton Stewart are within 30 miles.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Boundaries: The boundaries are clearly indicated with blue markings on posts, fence posts and trees around the woodland. The centre of the burn denotes the northeast boundary.
