Coed Morfa is a fair sized young woodland growing on a unusually level site.
The land was once salt marsh, being part of the Glaslyn estuary, and was reclaimed and drained after the building of the cob (a sort of dam) in Porthmadog in the 1800s. This now leaves the woodland placed in a dramatic setting, on the level plain of the river and also surrounded by the peaks of Snowdonia.
The woodland consists mainly of young broadleaf trees fringed with a few more mature trees. The trees are mostly downy birch and silver birch, and also include many young oaks and a scattering of other species.
There is a large hard surfaced parking area providing room for several vehicles. From here a path can be seen heading directly west along the side of a drainage channel, providing access to the woodland on foot. The path is on slightly raised ground and provides a good vantage point to get an overview of the wood. The path then leads to a larger track that allows access along the western boundary of the woodland.
There are several drainage channels that cross the site, and these are often surrounded by areas of reeds. These help provide varied refuges for wildlife, including an abundance of amphibians with herons and buzzards also being regular visitors.
Please take extra care to avoid the drainage channels when visiting the woodland.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Boundaries:
The north boundary adjoins farm land and is fenced. The eastern boundary follows some electricity lines. The southern boundary follows the right of way to the woodland and also runs close to a main drainage ditch. The western boundary is formed by an access track. All boundaries are marked in red.
